What is OCIA for Adults?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a discernment process for adults who are exploring the Catholic Church, considering conversion, or seeking to complete their sacraments of initiation. Through OCIA, you’ll deepen your understanding of the Catholic faith, experience the life of our St. Jude community, and when ready, prepare to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.
What Can You Expect?
OCIA is more than just learning about the Catholic faith—it’s about discovering and deepening your relationship with God and the Church. Our meetings are opportunities to learn, pray together, and reflect on your personal faith journey. You won’t be alone; a dedicated team of sponsors and catechists will be there to accompany you as you prayerfully discern whether Catholicism is right for you.
How Long Does OCIA Last?
OCIA at St. Jude typically lasts about a year, depending on each person’s readiness and schedule. It is structured into four stages, each guiding you at your own pace:
1. Inquiry-This is the starting point, where you can ask questions, learn the basics of the Catholic faith, and explore what it means to live as a Catholic.
2. Catechumenate-During this main stage, you’ll go deeper into the teachings of the Church, gaining a fuller understanding as you prepare to receive the sacraments.
3. Purification and Enlightenment-In this reflective stage, you’ll take time for prayer and spiritual preparation, making final steps toward receiving the sacraments.
4. Mystagogy-After receiving the sacraments, this final stage helps you reflect on your experiences and integrate your newfound faith more fully into your daily life.
Joining OCIA at St. Jude
If you’re ready to take the next step or even if you’re just curious, we welcome you to join our OCIA. To get started, simply click on the appropriate links below and fill out the online registration forms. There are two parts: one for you (Part A) and one for your sponsor or godparent (Part B).
What is a Sponsor or Godparent?
Sponsors (or godparents) play a special role in your faith journey. They are there to encourage you, pray for you, and share their own experiences of living out the Catholic faith. Sponsors or godparents must be Catholics in good standing with their Church, and if married, they must be in a valid Catholic marriage. If you don’t have someone to serve in this role, we will try to help you find a sponsor that is right for you.
